Bordeaux
Futures
|
The
term 'Bordeaux Futures' is given to the practice
of buying and selling world-class wines after the wine has
been fermented and blended but before the wine is bottled,
aged and released from the winery. While this takes place
with some special wines around the world, wine futures sales
are very much identified with the French wine producing
region of Bordeaux. Another term for wine futures is "En
Primeur".
|
Wines
from Bordeaux are usually tasted from cask samples by journalists
and key wholesale and retail buyers from around the world.
These tastings are organized events that take place in spring
(March and April) following the harvest. The actual release
of the wines from chateaux takes place in the late spring
or early summer of the 2nd year following the harvest.
|
Bordeaux
wines are usually sold by the chateaux in lots called "Tranches".
Nearly all the best wines are sold through this method and
the prices offered in these releases are usually the lowest
prices at which those wines will ever be offered. It is
common for there to be as many as three tranches from any
given Chateau. The prices in the tranches will likely vary
and are based on the demand that exists for the wine at
that time.
